As part of its commitment to environmental care and the well-being of the communities where it operates, Austral Group--in partnership with the NGO Bureo--built an artificial wetland at Educational Institution 89506 - Eduardo Ferrick Ring School, located in the district of Coishco, Ancash region, which serves more than 600 boys and girls.
The wetland constitutes an environmental project funded by the Net Positiva program, through the reuse of disused fishing nets that Austral has delivered to Bureo. This NGO uses them as raw material for new products.
The artificial wetland also responds to the need to address the water shortage problem in the district of Coishco, and to the need to promote environmental education in schools by raising awareness among students about innovative environmental projects.
Adriana Giudice, CEO of Austral Group, highlighted that this project constitutes a first step toward a larger initiative that will involve the planting of significant green areas. The wetland will allow the school to treat and reuse its domestic water for the implementation of important green areas, transforming it into an eco-school. “In this way, we reaffirm our commitment to the Coishco community and the importance of developing socio-environmental projects for our children. They will not only be able to enjoy new sustainable and eco-friendly spaces, but will also directly experience the benefits of circular economy through the reuse of a vital resource such as water”, she explained.
Nancy Salazar, the principal of Eduardo Ferrick Ring School, thanked the fishing company for the development of this project. Now, the water used by the school will no longer go to the sewer, but rather to the expansion of green areas, which will directly benefit their educational community.
The artificial wetland is a biological treatment system that uses stones of different diameters as filtration media, while plant roots serve to digest or remove the organic load. As the plants and their roots grow, they enhance their ability to degrade and eliminate the organic load in the water, while beautifying the space where it is located, thus creating a unique ecosystem.

We collaborated with the social enterprise Bureo to build the first artificial wetland at the Educational Institution 89506 – Eduardo Ferrick Ring School in Coishco, Ancash. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental conservation and the well-being of the communities where we operate.
The wetland is the beginning of a broader project that will involve planting vast green areas. By allowing the treatment and reuse of wastewater, the wetland will enable the school to create significant green spaces, achieving its transformation into an eco-school.
