  • The company receives the highest recognition from MINAM for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment.

Lima, September 2024.- In recognition of its work in the sustained reduction of greenhouse gases for two consecutive years, the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) awarded the fishing company Austral Group, a leading company in sustainability in the sector, the fourth star of its ‘Carbon Footprint Peru’ program.

The company's general manager, Adriana Giudice, said that this recognition, which makes Austral Group the first fishing company to obtain such a distinction, demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and care for the environment.

The executive said that measuring the Corporate Carbon Footprint allows mapping all environmental management of the company, enabling the identification of opportunities for improvement in efficiency and innovation. She also considered that reporting on the MINAM Peru Carbon Footprint Platform is not only an act of transparency towards all its stakeholders; but also a contribution to the country's commitment to reducing emissions.

“We have always seen it this way, which is why we report on our work every year, and today, we are very proud to have achieved the highest recognition in this Peruvian State program,” Giudice stressed.

The executive noted that for the purposes of the Peru Carbon Footprint program, Austral Group, in addition to presenting its annual greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement report, presented external verification of its emissions and mitigation actions that show the reduction of emissions, which was carried out by the international certifying agency SGS.

Changing the energy matrix

Giudice explained that the main material issues identified in the Austral Sustainability Committee's roadmap are: management of environmental practices and climate change; aspects that are measured under the guidelines of the ISO 14064-1: 2018 standard.

In this regard, the main action aimed at reducing GHG is the change of energy matrix to natural gas, which began in 2013 at the Pisco plant, and then continued in 2016 and 2018 at the Chancay and Coishco plants, respectively; with an investment of US$ 4.7 million.

The executive supported the project to change the energy matrix of its Coishco plant, which represents an estimated savings in emissions of 12,967 TCO2eq, accumulated between 2019 and 2023.

Finally, Giudice pointed out that “the distinction of the fourth star commits us to continue promoting actions in line with the fight against climate change and that ensure the sustainability and care of our sea.”
